MI vs CSK: History of thrilling encounters, last-ball finishes

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have been the two most successful IPL teams in the history of the tournament, and have provided plenty of nostalgic matches to fans over the years. The two teams will begin their IPL 2025 with a match against each other on Sunday evening at Chepauk. Let's recall some of the classic contests between the two teams over the years.

The first encounter between these two in the IPL yielded a high-scoring thriller. Fifties by Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina at a brisk rate propelled CSK to 208, and though MI lost wickets at regular intervals, they continued the chase. Abhishek Nayar and Harbhajan Singh reduced the equation to nine off the last four deliveries, but Joginder Sharma held his nerve to guide CSK home.

Mumbai, 2012 - MI won by two wickets

Following a couple of years of one-sided encounters came the actual humdinger. MI's chase of 174 had been spearheaded by half-centuries by Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma. But a spectacular collapse - 134 for 1 reduced to 159 for 8 - left them requiring 16 from the last over and then 14 from three balls. No fear! Dwayne Smith, who took part in his opening game for the season, drove Ben Hilfenhaus over mid-wicket and long-leg fence for 6, 4, 4 to celebrate with the camp in MI.

Mumbai, 2014 - Four-wicket victory for CSK

Smith - now with the other team - had set up CSK's pursuit of 158 with a fifty. But Lasith Malinga's death overs wizardry left CSK still requiring 11 from the last over. CSK, though, had their own death overs master in the middle: MS Dhoni hit a six and a four off Kieron Pollard to seal it with three balls to spare.

Mumbai, 2018 - CSK by one wicket

CSK's return after a two-year suspension saw them play the defending champions in their first match. Hardik Pandya and rookie spinner Mayank Markande claimed three-fors and CSK, chasing 166, were buried at 118 for 8 in the 17th over. With 47 required off the last three, Dwayne Bravo hit 19 and 20 off the subsequent two overs, and a badly hamstrung Kedar Jadhav, one-legged and batting, completed the task in the final over.

Hyderabad 2019 - MI by one run

A fourth IPL crown was on offer for either team. The match ebbed and flowed and reduced CSK to a requirement of nine from the final over. Shane Watson, with a bleeding knee, was run-out for 80 on the fourth ball. With two required off the last ball, Malinga - with statistics of 0 for 42 in his opening three overs - bowled the perfect yorker to rattle Shardul Thakur in front and give MI the trophy.

Delhi, 2021 - MI won by four wickets

Ambati Rayudu was aggressive against his own previous team, and propelled CSK to 218. It was more than required when MI totaled 94 for 3 at the 12th over mark. However, with 125 required of the final eight overs - and 48 in the final three overs - Kieron Pollard sent six fours and eight sixes and scored runs to see MI home with a scamper by the team while getting on one's pads by the final delivery of the game.

Navi Mumbai, 2022 - CSK won the match by three wickets

Both MI and CSK had a poor time after the mega auction prior to IPL 2022, so this was a bottom-of-the-table match. Tilak Varma's 43-ball 51 not out led MI to 155 after Mukesh Choudhary had destroyed their top order. Then Daniel Sams did the same to CSK. It was down to CSK requiring 16 from the last four balls with Dhoni against Jaydev Unadkat. In a show of retro brilliance, Dhoni clinched the match with a run of 6, 4, 2 and 4
